Temporarily leaving Split and its Roman palace in our wake, we’ll sail south to magical old Dubrovnik. As well as visiting bars somehow built into the cliffside, you can walk atop the enclosing 13th-century walls before a hike or cable-car ride up Mount Srd for some thrilling views.

Reached after a day at sea, Slovenia’s handsome resort city of Piran is a web of winding Venetian alleyways and specialist seafood restaurants. Next comes Venice itself. Amid this iconic city, sail along the Grand Canal under Rialto Bridge in a gondola before devouring far too many cicchetti (Venetian tapas-like snacks) near the Doge’s Palace.

Back on Croatia’s mainland in the city of Pula, one of Earth’s most complete Roman amphitheatres awaits. Following that is Rab, with its 30 sandy beaches, bell towers and Maraschino-infused cake, and then the dinkier isle of Molat, whose many walking trails bisect maquis and pine forests en route to empty bays

Continuing down the Dalmatian Coast, you’ll find the terracotta-roofed centre of Zadar perfectly placed for exploring rugged islands just offshore, and its fellow centre Šibenik a gateway to two national parks: inland Krka, famous for waterfalls one can bathe under, and Kornati’s cluster of more breathtaking islets. It’s then just a short voyage back to Split.
