Bidding adieu to Antigua’s capital St John’s, we’ll steer a course to the French Caribbean and Guadeloupe. Visitors to activity-packed Basse-Terre, one of two main islands, can hike the grumbling, green Grande Soufrière volcano, or go horse-riding or snorkelling. Next, it’s Nevis’s turn to seduce us with her eponymous peak and lush interior. Relaxation rates highly here, so go with it: sinking into silky sands and feasting on fresh fish.
Nevis is sleepy, but Barbuda’s on another level. Blissfully undeveloped, this tiny sister island to Antigua also bursts with natural beauty. You can snorkel alongside turtles off pink-hued sands or spot endemic frigatebirds amid a sanctuary. Then it’s time to up the glamour as we reach St Barts. If boutiques and fine-dining are on your thing, sophisticated Gustavia is the place. Otherwise, the ravishing Saint Jean beach is just a short hop away.
More swaying palms and reef-fringed sands characterise Virgin Gorda, a British Virgin Island where it’s tempting to while away the day wallowing in water. That could perhaps be at the Baths, where giant boulders form secluded sea pools. Later, relax (even more) with a rum punch in the sea breeze as we spend a day sailing back to Antigua.
