View on Mykonos island, Cyclades, Greece

Athens’ mighty Acropolis fortress makes an appropriate starting point for this history-happy voyage. Our classically square-rigged vessel journeys first to the sacred Cycladic island of Delos, birthplace of twins Apollo and Artemis. Initially a shrine, the ruined, UNESCO-protected centre here includes marble theatres and lion-themed terraces.

Including its cool restaurants, neighbouring Mykonos is best known for hedonism or holidaying celebs. If you want another dose of the past, however, hike up through Mykonos Town to garden-hugged Panigirakis Castle: fantastic sea views await beside its circular Cycladic tower. Still-better-preserved wonders await in Turkey’s Ephesus, near the resort of Kuşadası. Amid this abandoned city, you can get an unrivalled sense of prehistoric life courtesy of two-tier libraries or temples.

We’ll call next at resort-town Çeşme. The beach clubs here vie for your attention with nearby Alacati, a picture of white-washed streets and sea-green shutters. Back in Greece, our penultimate port of call is Volos, aka the City of the Argonauts – it was from here that Jason supposedly set off for the Golden Fleece. Volos is a gateway to both Mount Pelion, whose rustic villages and coves featured in the film Mamma Mia, and miraculous Meteora, where medieval monasteries teeter atop 700-metre rock pillars, before we return to Piraeus, the port serving Athens.
