Beautiful bay with colorful houses in Portofino, Liguria, Italy

Saying adios to beguiling Barcelona, we’ll spend a day crossing the Mediterranean to France’s breathtaking Côte d’Azur. There awaits St Tropez, which last century transformed from a simple fishing village into the place to see and be seen. Follow in the footsteps of Brigitte Bardot and co by sitting down for a quay-front coffee at Senequier, lounging on picture-perfect beaches or shopping in très-chic boutiques. Along the coast at Antibes, where superyachts routinely moor up, you could browse a Provençal food market or puzzle at Picasso works amid the old Grimaldi Castle.

Now journeying along Italy’s flanks, we’ll pause at pretty Portofino. Candy-coloured houses hug the harbourfront here as a maze of streets spider their way uphill; the 15th-century Castello Brown offers the finest views. Further south, maritime city Livorno enchants too with its network of Venetian-style canals and stellar seafood restaurants.

From there, we sail for a day across the Tyrrhenian Sea towards the most glamorous town on French-owned Corsica. Porto-Vecchio’s elevated citadel contains cafe-lined plazas perfect for people-watching cafe plazas, yet you might prefer to move on Michelin-starred seaside restaurants, Palombiaggia’s sumptuous sandy beach or cove-dotted islands. Buy a bottle of underrated Corsican wine before our journey east to Civitavecchia, the gateway port to Rome.

Now journeying along Italy’s flanks, we’ll pause at pretty Portofino. Candy-coloured houses hug the harbourfront here as a maze of streets spider their way uphill.
