Saying goodbye to Athens and its iconic sights, we cross to Crete’s atmospheric old port of Chania. Here, Venetian townhouses host inventive tavernas, while one shopping street is solely reserved for leatherware. That all said, picture-perfect beaches, white windmills and Samaria Gorge walks beckon close by should you like to explore further. A similar dilemma awaits in Sicily’s beautiful east-coast hub of Siracusa: stay and explore one of the ancient world’s key cities, including the magical island-quarter of Ortigia.
As we arrive in Malta, Valletta will prove seductive: the capital has a strong design scene, a fine-arts museum in MUZA and harbour-crossing cruises. Then again, Gozo’s world-famous diving may prove irresistible, as might gigantic temples (of various vintages) and a 5000-year-old underground necropolis. Our next stop, Sardinia’s capital Cagliari, is amazing to first behold: its domes and golden palazzi soar up from the sea below a castle. History fans might tour the area after visiting the extensive ruins of nearby Nora, a 3000-year-old clifftop city. Alternatively, Italy’s longest beach sprawls just east of town. Our voyage finishes in Mallorca’s honey-stone centre Palma, where high-class art galleries, restaurants and studios pepper medieval streets below the mesmerising Catedral de Mallorca.
Tour to the historical Arkadi Monastery in Crete and embark on outdoor jeep adventures and discover beautiful scenery in Siracusa, Sicily.
