The Gaudí confections, cava bars, barrios and beaches of Barcelona are hard to leave behind, but it’s worth doing so for Port Vendres. Scenically overlooked by snow-dusted Pyrenean peaks, this French port on the Vermillion Coast is renowned for its fish restaurants; you’ll also find elegant 17th-Century defences and a walking trail themed on former resident Charles Rennie Mackintosh, who painted several watercolours here.

A day at sea has us docking in Ibiza. No longer known solely for foam-soaked clubbing, this sun-kissed island boasts a sumptuous pine-clad interior, many traditional, time-trapped towns and some stellar white-sand shores. Ibiza Town itself throws in a World Heritage-listed old quarter and great shopping for good measure. Bidding goodbye to the Balearics, we’ll then cross to Valencia. There’s a great beach here, too, but you might prefer to admire Santiago Calatrava’s futuristic arts complex or to tuck into Spain’s premier paella.

Another day at sail takes Golden Horizon to Tarragona, one of the world’s great historical cities. Its headline acts are the mosaic-filled National Archaeological Museum, a seaside Roman amphitheatre and the ‘Catedral’, blending Gothic and Romanesque principles below an octagonal tower-dome. Don’t miss the port’s cosmopolitan restaurant scene, either, before our return to Barcelona.
