Elba, another archipelago island, is our penultimate port of call and a great bet for wine-tasting, history – Napoleon spent a busy year in exile here – or horizontal time spent on more wonderful beaches.
Amalfi Coast & Tyrrhenian Islands

Rome’s cultural and historic delights bookend this voyage perfectly. Leaving Italy’s capital behind, we’ll sail across the Tyrrhenian Sea to Bonifacio. On the southern tip of French-owned island Corsica, this is an exceptionally photogenic place: its medieval citadel teetering above striated cliffs, and the harbour up a narrow, twisting fjord. Wander its car-free, cafe-lined lanes, or sail to nearby grotto caves and sandy islets.
A day at sea takes us south to Lipari, the largest of the Aeolian Islands off northern Sicily. There’ll be time to ferry-hop the archipelago and make sure you have your camera ready as we devote a day to cruising slowly past the volcano-isle of Stromboli, which has constantly belched out molten lava for around 2,500 years now.
We’ll follow the mainland north to Amalfi, a charming town that gives its name to Italy’s world-famous coast. June makes a canny time to visit: the chichi, pastel-frosted villages, clifftop hiking paths and cute coves won’t yet be chokka, but the local lemons are in fine, fragrant harvest. Elba, another archipelago island, is our penultimate port of call and a great bet for wine-tasting, history – Napoleon spent a busy year in exile here – or horizontal time spent on more wonderful beaches. We’ll then return to Rome.
