We set off north from Rhodes to fellow Greek paradise Kos, where golden-sand coves fringe an unusually lush interior. You can also find crags, Corinthian columns and an ancient plane tree below which Hippocrates, the so-called ‘Father of Medicine’, supposedly taught. Only ten miles away, Turkey’s cosmopolitan resort of Bodrum is our next stop. Sea-view restaurants and superyachts perpetuate here, as do blissful bays and blue-trimmed buildings.

Ready for the glammest Greek island of them all? Party-minded Mykonos is perfect for people-watching, especially amid the labyrinthine, cubist streets of Mykonos Town. Anyone fond of wreck-diving or lounging in hedonistic beach clubs is also in luck, while the 16 sugar-white, spindly-sailed windmills on a seaside hill always get photographers purring.

Time for a complete change of place. Koufonisia is a trio of small isles whose blissed-out beaches and brilliant blue seas earn Caribbean comparisons. Despite those, and despite some tremendous waterside tavernas, tourists are remarkably few. Far more famous is Crete, although we’ll arrive at Agios Nikolaos in the quieter east. Thanks to three hills and lagoon-like Voulismeni Lake, this handsome port has various waterfronts on which to stroll or sip coffees. Top up your tan on nearby Voulisma Beach before a leisurely day at sea en route back to Rhodes.
