Landmarks and beautiful places (cities) of northern Italy - elegant Trieste with charming streets and canals

From Split, Croatia’s liveliest port city, we’ll first spend a day following the Adriatic Sea north to Trieste. Just an espresso’s throw from the Slovenian border, this Italian port is considered the centre of Italy’s renowned coffee-drinking culture. Caffeine can help power explorations of its dreamlike Miramare Castle, a sugar-white stunner beside the sea. Now our voyage returns south to Croatia, stopping at the equally striking Italianate city of Rovinj and then beautifully-unspoilt island Lošinj, whose pure air is said to have healing properties.

We’ll next spend a morning anchored off the 140 uninhabited Kornati Islands, swimming leisurely beside their bleached-rock flanks or going for a snorkel above reefs. Our subsequent port of call is much more bustling: the walled city of Dubrovnik, with its iconic, walkable defensive walls, chichi beach bars, cable car-accessed viewpoints and maze of cobbled or stepped streets.

The return north to Split involves a series of handsome Dalmatian Coast islands. Pretty, pine-scented Mjlet has hiking trails plus bewitching blue waters at Odysseus’s Cave, where the eponymous, shipwrecked hero was seduced for seven years by a nymph. Vis is a sleepy haunt with jaw-dropping bays and coves, while Brač is best-known for its v-shaped beach, Zlatni Rat – near to which we’ll moor up.
