Temporarily bidding Ciao to remarkable Rome, we follow Italy’s coast north into France from the longstanding port of Civitavecchia. After a full, thrilling day at sea, our first stop is a Côte d’Azur classic. With the city having only concluded its famous film festival a day before, Cannes’s glam beach clubs and beautiful shopping streets will still contain the odd familiar face.
We now make for the Mediterranean islands of Corsica and Sardinia. French and Italian territories respectively, each have stunning beaches, jaw-dropping interiors and much independent spirit. First comes the Corsican town of Calvi, its 13th-Century citadel close to Cap Corse, a scenic peninsula lined with pretty fishing villages, and the Agriates Desert, whose wilderness concludes in wild white-sand shores. Next up is Porto Torres, a jumping-off point for north-west Sardinia’s own powdery, perfect coves and ruined Roman cities.
After another day at sail, we return to mainland Italy and pause at the Tuscan town of Porto Santo Stefano, which ascends Mount Argentario from its waterfront. Sip coffee on a classic boardwalk before heading off to hike the time-trapped Maremma Natural Park or wander wine-making isle Elba, where Napoleon was exiled. Then it’s time for us to return to Civitavecchia.
