Having soaked up Athens’ extraordinary monuments, we’ll sail to low-profile Tinos. As well as a place of pilgrimage, this wild and rugged Cycladic island is rich in natural treasures and revered for its food and wines. Continuing east we reach Fourni, also largely untouched by tourism. Here lazy lunches in humble tavernas and leaps into the illuminous Aegean are recommended. The waters around this tiny archipelago are littered with wrecks and submerged treasures, remnants of its position on centuries-old trade routes.

Samos is steeped in history, too. Museums bring antiquities to life while one dedicated to its age-old sweet muscat wine will give you a taste for the local tipple. Samos’s beaches are also legendary. Leaving them behind, we’ll sail, like seafaring merchants of old, on to Turkey. You’ll certainly want to do some trading in the bazaars of Kuşadası’s characterful old town before admiring Ephesus’s extensive, evocative Greco-Roman city ruins.

After a day at sea, the pine-covered hills and craggy coves of Turkey’s Turquoise Coast emerge. Topped by a mighty fortress, Marmaris is a charming base for exploring this dazzling coastline before we meander back to Greece and finish our adventure in Rhodes’ maze-like centre, where much more medieval history beckons.
