After you’ve gasped at all Rome’s iconic landmarks, we’ll journey south from Civitavecchia to Ponza, a hidden gem of an island whose vibrant villages cling to hillsides. Then comes the vertiginous Amalfi Coast town of Sorrento, within reach of Capri, Pompeii and Positano’s A-list beach. Following that is a scenic cruise around the active volcano-island of Stromboli, which frequently belches out molten lava, before we dock on mainland Sicily near the classy town of Taormina. Both its preserved Greek theatre and views of Mount Etna are wonderful.
Our journey around Italy’s coast continues as we goggle at Gallipoli, a Puglian resort whose castle-crowned old town occupies an islet. Having crossed the Ionian Sea, Golden Horizon then arrives on Albania’s beach-lined Riviera. Beyond its ten kilometres of sand, the city of Durrës is a unique blend of Byzantine and Roman ruins beside classic communist architecture. Complete with café-crammed squares and the odd Venetian palace, medieval Kotor lines Montenegro’s own seaboard. Ensure you’re out on deck while we enter its namesake Bay, to witness plunging, jungle-green slopes enveloping the turquoise waters. Finally, in beautiful Croatia, we combine idyllic islands – elegant Korcula and glamorous Hvar – with fairytale port cities such as Split, our final call.
