Jewels of the Caribbean

Between stops to relish the waterfalls and white-sand shores of St Vincent and Grenada, we’ll introduce you to a lesser-visited trio of Dutch islands known for their marine sites, colonial architecture and citrus liqueur.

Bidding farewell to Barbados, our circular voyage first drops anchor in St Vincent’s hill-hugged port capital Kingstown. Stroll through parrot-filled botanic gardens or walk to the spellbinding Dark View Falls before we continue on to the ‘ABC’ islands, a Dutch-administered trio down near mainland South America. First up is Curaçao, with its lively centre in Willemstad, whose evocative old quarters have UNESCO World Heritage status. Known for its namesake blue liqueur, flavoured by a local citrus fruit, the island also yields more captivating coves and more dreamy diving.

Marine fans will also love little Aruba, where shipwrecks pepper seas, as will anyone keen on aloe vera products. The prettily-painted colonial capital of Oranjestad seduces, too, with its restored old buildings and luxury boutiques. Our last of the ABC island calls is crescent-shaped Bonaire, where visitors can conquer idyllic beaches on uninhabited islets or watch pink flamingo colonies at seaside salt pans. The ocean is  Bonaire’s biggest temptation, though, courtesy of some 85 dive sites – many accessible from shore for snorkellers. Sub-aqua lovers are again in luck at our final stop, Grenada, with an Underwater Sculpture Park to explore. The dry-land distractions range from swimmable waterfall pools to rum-distillery tours and Grand Anse’s two-mile curve of implausibly-white sand – assuming, that is, you can resist the House of Chocolate amid red-roofed capital St George’s.
