Temporarily abandoning Barcelona’s buzz and beauty, we’ll spend a day crossing the Mediterranean Sea to Sardinia. Our destination on this Italian island is the red-roofed, northwesterly port Alghero, where you can roam the narrow lanes of a cobbled, cafe-lined old quarter or decamp to sandy beaches. Also nearby is the wild, picturesque peninsula of Capo Caccia, whose last sheer cliff is topped with a white lighthouse.
Over in Ajaccio, the pastel-hued capital of French-owned Corsica – a mountainous, maquis-scented isle just north – you can learn about Napoleon Bonaparte, whose childhood home is now a museum, or take boat tours of the Calanches de Piana’s spiky, red-pink rock formations.
Now it’s time for a town on the Côte d’Azur. Great for both watersports and gentle seaside hikes, Cavalaire-sur-Mer provides all this famous French coast’s mandatory sun, sea, sand and luminous colours, yet none of the arrogance of other over-busy resorts. There’s lots of great Provençal cuisine, too. Speaking of food, before reuniting you with Barcelona we’ll also call in at handsome Sanary-sur-Mer, which is best known for fresh seafood and the cade, a chickpea pancake. Brightly-painted wooden boats dot its esplanade, while a pointy stone watchtower stands guard slightly inland.
