Departing Christchurch’s arty port town of Lyttleton, we’ll navigate the photogenic, penguin- packed Marlborough Sounds. At their heart lies the port of Picton, where a cosmopolitan, cafe- lined seafront and floating maritime museum vie for attention. Watching for sharks as we cross the Cook Strait to the North Island, we’ll arrive in New Zealand’s cool capital, Wellington. There’s much to investigate here – from food trucks and a golden-sand beach to sea-kayaking, scenic cable-car rides and the national museum, Te Papa.
We’ll next pause in Napier to admire marvellously-preserved art deco architecture – self-guided walking tours are easy to complete – before docking in the country’s unofficial ‘Chardonnay Capital’, Gisborne. Also Earth’s first city to greet the sun each morning, Gisborne accompanies its wine scene with fascinating Māori culture.
We’ll sail by White Island, the ever-active peak of a submarine volcano, whose smoking fumaroles we’ll see en route to the Bay of Plenty. A stop in Tauranga allows you to relax in the nearby beach town of Mount Maunganui before our cruise finishes in Auckland. Even by Kiwi standards, the scenery surrounding this pulsating city is extraordinary: rainforest, mountains, black-sand shores and bays with vineyard-covered islands are all close.
