There’s far more to Mallorca than its sun-seeking, party island reputation would lead you to believe. There’s the island’s capital, Palma, which is rich in history and culture, numerous secluded coves and a mountainous interior that hides traditional island villages where time seems to be at a standstill.
Across the Balearic Sea is Valencia, the third-largest city in Spain and our first port of call. Span centuries as you go from the Gothic cathedral, which was built over 600 years ago, to the fantastically futuristic complex of museums and entertainment venues at Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias (the City of Arts and Sciences).
Port Vendres is just over the border in France. It may sit slightly off-the-beaten-track but is well worth a visit for its seafood alone. Each day, fishing vessels enter this deep natural harbour and unload their daily catch, which ends up on the plates of the town’s best restaurants. For the penultimate leg of the cruise, we’ll head back south to Tarragona, a characterful port city that’s home to a cluster of some of the most important Roman ruins in Spain, such as the amphitheatre and the 3rd-Century city walls.
