We begin in Civitavecchia, the gateway to the Italian capital, Rome, where there are jaw-dropping ruins and poster-child monuments around almost every corner. Our first port of call is the unique medieval village of Porto Venere, which is located on the romantically-named Gulf of Poets. It’s just a stone’s throw from the more famous five towns that line the famed Cinque Terre coastline, yet is still wonderfully under the radar. The town itself is a joy to explore, but we also recommend taking to the water to see the region’s beautiful caves and cliffs, or hitting the local trails on foot.

We’ll swap Italian glamour for French flair as we sail across the Tyrrhenian Sea to busy Bastia, a historic port city on Corsica’s northeast coast. Spend time down by the water in Terra Vecchia, up in the walled citadel, Terra Nova, or exploring the trails that criss-cross the surrounding sweet chestnut forests. It’s then time to sip on a cooling limoncello in the lofty town of Sorrento, an Amalfi Coast favourite with sun-seeking holidaymakers. In Naples, work up an appetite for world-famous pizza by wandering around grand churches and castles; or head to nearby Pompeii to see the vast archaeological site that was once buried under volcanic ash.
