Greece and Turkey’s Ancient Wonders – Cancelled

This exclusive voyage will help you island-hop around smaller, less-trodden Greek isles, visiting the likes of Naxos, Leros and Kalymnos. You’ll have time to go diving in superb spots, sail to a port never visited by an ‘international’ ship and visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ephesus.

From Piraeus, close to Athens, we’ll set sail for Naxos in the Cyclades, where beautifully rugged mountains peak at 1000-metre-high Mount Zeus and fertile fields tumble down the hillsides. You can stick to the key sights around harbourside Hora, with its web of winding cobblestone streets, Venetian mansions and Apano Kastro (‘upper castle’). Alternatively, head inland to charming villages or make for the sandy stretch of southwest coast. We’ll venture off the beaten track to the Dodecanese and mythical Leros. We will be the first international ship to visit Leros, aside from the local yachts and vessels that dock here. This serene spot brims with historical monuments, so explore the medieval castle and stroll through age-old settlements.

A short island-hop away, an authentic slice of Greece awaits: picture-perfect Kalymnos. Pastel-hued houses cling to the hillside and cobbled streets draped in bougainvillea are dotted with quaint café tables. The area is a hotspot for unique dive sites, so we’ll take full advantage and open our marina for watersports, too. When we reach Turkey, a change of pace in cosmopolitan Bodrum takes us to stunning beaches with sea-view restaurants for people-watching and yacht spotting. Over in Kusadasi, browse colourful boutiques, barter at spice-scented markets and take your pick of eight sun-soaked beaches. Our recommendation is a chance to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ephesus. Stroll down ancient streets and see the city’s ruins, including the Library of Celsus, dating back to 117 AD.

Golden Horizon is the first and only ship ever planned to visit the island of Leros.
